Busy Barrow - ergonomically designed heavy duty wheelbarrow

PRESS RELEASE - Launch of The Busy Barrow™ - "Super Wheelbarrow"

  • British design
  • British built
  • Easier to use than a conventional barrow
  • Scientifically proven to reduce strain on the muscle joints
  • Even negotiates steps

04th May, 2009 – Darlaston, UK. When designer Ivan Williams began building a garden on the steep slopes of the Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire, England, he soon discovered that a conventional wheelbarrow simply wasn’t up to the job. And so he set about inventing a multi-terrain wheelbarrow of his own.

The result – a few years and design tweaks later – is The Busy Barrow™ - a remarkable piece of innovation that not only makes gardening easier, it significantly reduces stress and strain on the muscle joints.

In fact rigid testing carried out by the University of Worcester concludes, that compared to a conventional barrow, The Busy Barrow lessens the overall impact on the body by as much as 45 per cent. That’s great news for anyone who already suffers from back/joint pain and any gardener who wants to avoid developing joint problems in the first place.

The Busy Barrow’s secret lies in both the unique, fully-patented, pivot design of its robust ‘skip-like’ load carrier and its clever frame geometry.

When carrying a load the pivoted carrier moves forward, closer to the weight-bearing axle, therefore reducing the weight felt on the arms. Not only that, on uneven or sloping ground, the pivot allows the container to remain in a level position, therefore, reducing the chance of spillage over the sides. With practice, users can handle The Busy Barrow up-and-down steps.

The carrier can also be locked into position and used more like a conventional barrow for tipping or emptying the contents with a shovel.

Meanwhile the beauty of the angular frame, constructed in sturdy tubular steel, allows users to perform a number of different tasks without bending the back.

Further advantages of the carrier, made from quality galvanized steel, is that it can be detached, dropped off and a new one fitted - just like a conventional skip. A range of carriers are available to buy separately to suit different tasks, such as a perforated container for carrying wet loads and a large heavy cloth container for transporting dry leaves Such features make gardening and similar tasks so much easier.

The Busy Barrow is currently being used by international award-winning plantsman Viv Marsh at his nurseries in Shrewsbury, England.

"The Busy Barrow is the most clever and versatile wheelbarrow I’ve yet encountered," he said. "Its sheer ease of use is a revelation with potential huge health benefits for gardeners everywhere, especially those who work in the trade."

"The wheelbarrow is a tougher than normal construction, ideal for the rough and tumble of my nursery. It's sure to be at home whether in a domestic garden setting or being used for heavy landscaping."

Developed by The Busy Barrow Company, based in the heart of the Black Country, England. The Busy Barrow is available as a fully welded version or as a flat-pack bolt-together version.
